Rant of the Day.

When you bag my ONE small item and I tell you I don't need a plastic bag (I do have hands, you know)...

Please don't throw away that bag into the trash can.

Do you ever run into these types of moments? I contemplated if I should have said something to her or if it was something I should just let go. Now that a half hour has gone by, I should have said something. What would you do? Say something or hope that the Sprouts cashier girl smartens up over time?

  1. I would have said something. Honestly, you can recycle bags at least.

  2. I do run into those type of moments and I do the same thing you did... not say anything then think about it later. I always come up with the best quips 30-mins too late! :)

    1. Yup! Exactly. I, then, replay the whole scene over in my head. I need to work on that!

  3. Yes, happens to me too but recently I got better at taking control. Occasionally now instead of wishing I had said something I wish I hadn't :)

    1. That's awesome that you have gotten better at controlling. It's always important to think first before you speak but in this case, I honestly wished I just said something. Live and learn, right?

  4. I think it's completely valid to say something - the cashier was likely just on automatic pilot (after all, she probably rings through hundreds of folks a day).

Just a simple, sincere smile and a "no thanks - too much plastic in the landfills already" would probably do the trick...

    1. I love that. Straight to the point and not mean at all. Noted! :)

  5. I think Micki (above) is right - that's the course of action that seems most effective to me. :)

    1. Thanks for your input! I will definitely try that next time...but then again, hopefully there is no 'next time' for that type of situation.

  6. I agree with Micki on the smile and being sincere. I'm glad most of the shops I frequent have a habit of asking you before they even reach for the bag :)

    1. That is really cool that most of the shops you go to ask :) Unfortunately, I haven't run into that too much but after a few nice comments, I hope that changes!

  7. Hi Cathy,
I would want to say something but probably stay silent. And then do the same as you and wish I had said something or obsessively think about what I should have said :) Thank you for your awesome comment on my blog. It made my day!

    1. Haha! Right? I need to get away from staying silent and actually speaking out to make a difference ;) You are very welcome Hannah!! Have a lovely weekend! :)

  8. I have similar moments, except I'm in the opposite situation. I'm the girl behind the checkout who is asked for a bag by someone who has only bought a chocolate bar. I want to tell them how ridiculous that is, but being the employee, I can't really go off on a rant :/ It's conflicting, hey?

    1. Oh man, I've been on the other side as well and it's pretty infuriating when someone can't attempt to carry a candy bar with their hands. It is definitely conflicting but the best we can do is spread that awareness. :)

  9. That might be another re-culture shock for me. In Korea, we had to pay for each plastic bag, so I'd often take a cloth bag. In Hawaii, they're baggin everything and often the bag isn't even full! But often, I catch them before they open the bag and say I don't need one. What helps is that I still carry a large bag with me, so I point at it and they know I'm gonna use that. But the plastic bag overuse thing is now one of my pet peeves.

    1. Absolutely. It was like that all over Europe too. Paying for a plastic bag was great motivation to carry your own bag and I wish we did it here in the States too. It's annoying right???
